Amamus, a "radical community centre within a bookshop" in Blackburn, transitioned from an anarchist to a mystical, new age bookshop by the 1970s.
By the 1970s, Amamus was known for its counterculture, radical politics and feminism. It was managed by Ian Ross. He sold underground magazines, literary journals and political tracts and hosted countercultural groups and a poetry, music and theatre performance space in a room above the bookshop.
With Dave Cunliffe Ian launched an alternative newspaper called the Blackburn Barker, using it to attack the activities of neo-fascists after their election to the town council.
Roger, Steve and Sue were linked to the bookshop from 1975.
