Shalimar Books / Soma Books

1977 — Present day
38 Kennington Lane, London, SE11 4LS

Shalimar Books, formerly known as Soma Books, is a unique book, craft, and fine art shop in South London. The shop has an extensive range of books covering diverse subjects from history, politics and caste to gender, poetry and fiction.

They feature a remarkable children’s section with a strong multicultural focus and an impressive range of fair-trade folk crafts from India, offering beautiful one-off pieces and unique gifts.

The roots of Shalimar Books trace back to the 1940s with the establishment of the Independent Publishing Company (IPCO), which published two anti-imperialist magazines. Anand Kumria took over the company from his father and began importing Indian books, creating the first business to specialise in this area in the UK.

Over 40 years ago, Anand and Mane Kumria founded Soma Books. The shop offered a wide range of Fair-Trade art and handmade craft products from India as well as books for children on Africa and the Caribbean. Shalimar Books was established in 2012 to reflect a move towards focusing on progressive South Asian literature. Anand and Mane's son Chetan continue to run the bookshop. Visitors to Shalimar Books today are greeted by vibrant colours, intricate embroideries, fine artwork, and vintage handmade crafts. It offers an immersive cultural experience, showcasing Indian art and artefacts in various forms.

Shalimar Books are members of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.
