The Second Shelf is a specialised bookshop dedicated to rare and antiquarian books, modern first editions, artwork, manuscripts, and other rediscovered works by or about women and non-binary people.
Founded in 2017 by AN Devers and located in Soho, London, The Second Shelf aims to prioritise works that have been overlooked, undervalued, and marginalised in order to correct the historical imbalance in the rare book trade, where men's works have long been favoured.
The Second Shelf offers a diverse selection of over 3,000 titles, from affordable first edition collectible Penguin paperbacks to rare manuscripts and historical ephemera.
Visitors can explore a wide range of topics, including suffrage, feminism, history, science, philosophy, cookery, and children's books. The bookshop also publishes The Second Shelf magazine, featuring writings by women authors.
The Second Shelf is a member of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.
