Ultima Thule had a brief but notable existence from around 1969 to 1973 at the Handysides Arcade. The bookshop was originally located on the south side of the north passage of the Arcade and was run by poets Tom Pickard and Tony Jackson.
Tom Pickard managed at least two other bookshops within the arcade at various times. Jon Silkin also played a role in setting up Ultima Thule. Ultima Thule was modelled after the renowned City Lights bookstore in San Francisco and Shakespeare and Company in Paris.
A comment under a 'Old Novocastrian' blog article said that the Young Volunteer Force (YVF) had its offices above the bookshop and was connected to it, possibly through Bill Feaver. Feaver, known for his Trotskyist views, was an art and history teacher who later became a renowned art critic and historian.
