York Community Books was established on the 3rd of October 1977 at 73 Walmgate.
Nick Wright recalls joining a 'student book society' at York University’s freshers' fair in Autumn 1977, which organised a weekly stall of radical books sourced from York Community Books. The stall, which may have predated the shop, avoided selling set texts to avoid conflict with Blackwells, the official campus bookshop.
The community bookshop provided a space for community activities, supported local campaigns, and distributed children’s books to community organisations as well as selling political badges and sometimes books to other left-wing bookshops.
In 1977, York Communitty Books it organised a conference in York that effectively created the Federation of Alternative Bookshops. In 1980, it hosted another conference that discussed the need for FAB to evolve into a Federation committed to wider radical movements for change, which led to the Federation of Radical Booksellers being established.
By 1985, York Community Books was sold after experiencing financial difficulties for some time.
