Clyde Books, known for its focus on politics, economics, and social science, was subjected to an attack by the BNP on Tuesday, January 21st, 1992. The incident involved local BNP organiser Steven Cartwright and two other individuals who vandalised the shop, causing significant disruption. This attack was part of a pattern of harassment, including regular graffiti on the shopfront.

Clyde Books also received several threatening phone calls but managed to raise substantial local press coverage. The bookshop made an appeal for help, and there was a movement to organise book publishers, bookshops, and writers to counter the rise of fascism across Europe.
