Calder Bookshop

2011 — Present day
51 The Cut, Bankside, London Borough of Lambeth, SE1

The Calder Theatre Bookshop, an independent bookshop and theatre, began in February 2011. It is centrally located in London in Waterloo, opposite the Young Vic.

It was co-founded by publishing legend John Calder, who introduced British audiences to literary greats like Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Duras, and Jorge Luis Borges.

The bookshop stocks new and second-hand books, specialising in theatre, philosophy, and politics. The Calder Theatre Bookshop also hosts its own theatre productions, film screenings, live jazz sessions, and book launches.

It offers a 32-seat theatre and a basement with a piano available for hire for rehearsals, auditions, castings, and workshops, but not for public performances.

Calder Theatre Bookshop was taken over by a group of actors and directors in 2010, cementing its reputation as a centre for theatrical and intellectual activities. They are members of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.
