Central Books

1939 — 1992
37 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8PS

Central Books, the bookshop of the Communist Party, was known for its extensive book collection consisting of 14,000 titles.

It specialised in politics, feminism, history, sociology, and trade unionism. It was celebrated for offering a wide range of new and secondhand books for socialists.

Central Books closed in March 1992, although it continues as a distribution service operating from East London, with potential for some mail-order retailing.

The shop's closure was attributed to an unfavourable site and a diminishing political base, marking the end of one of the longest-running radical bookshops.
