Deptford Bookshop & Literacy Centre started as a mobile bookstall with the aim of increasing literacy through book sales and literacy classes. Key staff members included Jane Mace and Christine Shearer.
The charity sold a diverse range of leftist, feminist, Black, and gay magazines and publications. The bookshop's stock consisted of 8,000 titles, with a focus on women's issues, Black affairs, gay/lesbian topics, and anti-racist/anti-sexist children's books.
The bookshop also offered community publishing, library supply, bookstalls on sale or return, children's storytelling, author events, and literacy classes.
Initially funded by the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) and later by Lewisham Council, the bookshop saw its funding end in 1997.
