Durham Community Bookshop opened its doors in 1978 at 14 Railway Street in Langley Park. In 1981, the bookshop relocated to 85a New Elvet and later, in 1985, it changed its name to Alleycat Books. By January 1990, the shop had moved again, this time to 28b Sutton Street.

The bookshop often found it challenging to increase its visibility. In the 1980s, the shop was supported by ten part-time, unpaid workers.

Durham Community Bookshop had a collection of 3,000 titles, with a range of fiction, plays, and poetry. It also featured non-sexist and non-racist children’s books, world development issues, environmental and green topics, and sexual politics.
