Progressive Books opened at 18 Norton Street in 1941. It is thought that the bookshop opened in response to the German attack on the USSR. They specialised in trade union and socialism literature.
In 1945 the bookshop faced financial difficulties. Control passed from the Lancashire District Committee to Central Books and so the bookshop held the name ‘Central Books’ between 1945 and 1950.
Progressive Books moved across Liverpool to 113 Mount Pleasant, then 12 Upper Duke Street and 12 Berry Street.
