The Student Bookshop in Hanley was part of a chain that allowed local managers a degree of independence.
Frank Edwards, the manager in the early 1970s, ensured the shop stocked political books, maintaining its reputation for diverse and thought-provoking literature.
Cecil Scrimgeour, one of the directors of the Student Bookshop, was a notable figure in the Cambridge area, known for his active involvement with the Workers' Educational Association (WEA) as a lecturer and historian.
The shop closed in 1973 or 1974.
