Bellman Books was a Maoist and communist bookshop affiliated with the Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist) HQ. It was located in a dark and forbidding former bank and it initially opened only on Saturdays from 10:30 to 16:30.
The bookshop faced challenges in developing or surviving as a mainstream establishment due to its stringent "Marxist-Leninist" policy towards what books they stocked.
Bellman Books maintained a collection of 2,000 titles specialising in Marxism-Leninism, the British Labour Movement, socialist countries, English literature, and children's books.
Reg Birch's wife, Dorothy, oversaw the shop and was known for her abrasively rude demeanour towards visitors, a characteristic vividly described by Alexei Sayle in his memoir "Stalin Ate My Homework."
