The Bookish Type is a queer indie bookshop located at 77a Great George Street, Leeds LS1 3BR.
It started in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic period in the Merrion Centre in Leeds, after a period of running book stalls at LGBT events.
The radical bookshop specialises in literature across the LGBTIQA+ spectrum, including fiction, children's books, young adult (YA) novels, memoirs, non-fiction, graphic novels, and poetry.
It stocks books on intersecting issues such as race, environment, and feminism.
It also serves as a multi-generational, daytime queer space and a community hub, hosting live readings, workshops, and other events.
The bookshop is run by Ray and Nic, who are both passionate about championing queer authors and literature.
They understand the importance of seeing oneself represented in literature and aim to create a welcoming and inclusive space for the local queer community.
The Bookish Type also runs a Pay It Forward scheme to make queer books available to those who can't afford them and holds Second Hand Sundays to raise money for local grassroots LGBTIQA+ groups.
They organise Queer History Tours around Leeds to educate and celebrate the city's rich LGBTIQA+ history.
Ray and Nic have successfully created a space where both queer and non-queer individuals can explore and engage with diverse queer literature.
The Bookish Type is a member of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.
