Four Provinces Bookshop (established 1966) specialised in Irish politics, language and historical literature, Irish novels, poetry and drama and also Irish music. It was owned by the Irish Republican organisation, The Connolly Association, and was staffed by volunteers.
In the early 1980s, Four Provinces moved from 242 Grays Inn Road to 244 Grays Inn Road following a decision by the council to sell the original premises.
The bookshop closed during 2005 due to essential maintenance works on the building. In 2009 the bookshop seemed likely to permanently close due to the council increasing rent from £2,500 to £4,000 per year.
