The Portal Bookshop in York, located on Patrick Pool, opened in 2019. When it opened it was one of only three specialist LGBTQIA+ bookshop in the UK. The bookshop offers a curated selection of science fiction, fantasy, and LGBTQIA+ books and merchandise.
It also showcases art, crafts, and jewellery from local creators within the queer community.
Upstairs, the bookshop provides a rail of donated clothing for those needing gender-affirming attire but who might feel uncomfortable shopping in traditional stores.
In 2022, Over The Rainbow Café opened above The Portal Bookshop. The cafe provides a welcoming space with accessibility features such as a downstairs table for those who struggle with steps and a ramp for wheeled access.
The space can also be hired for events and parties, further enhancing its role as a community hub.
The Portal Bookshop is a member of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.
