Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) began as World Education Berkshire, an educational charity set up by Ann Yarwood in 1981. The charity rented 103 London Street, naming it Reading International Support Centre (RISC), and later moved to larger premises in the old London Street bookshop, getting a loan with the help of banker Michael Duerden.
After a major renovation, RISC opened its new premises on September 16, 1996, along with the World Shop to fund their educational work. Two years later, the Pangaea Café, later known as the Global Café, was also opened.
RISC focuses on raising awareness of international issues and promoting sustainable development, equality, and social justice. The centre organises events and exhibitions on global issues, hosting speakers from the South, and collaborates with schools and community organisations.
Over the years, it has housed organisations like the Reading Refugee Support Group and the Southern Ethiopia People’s Action Group. The centre's permaculture roof garden, established in 2002, adds to its educational activities.
The World Shop, part of RISC, offers a large range of fair trade products, with proceeds supporting the centre’s educational initiatives.
RISC is a member of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.
