Virago was founded by Carmen Callil in 1973 as a feminist publishing company. Its creation was inspired by the success of the Women's Liberation Movement. It aimed to address gender inequality in publishing and provide a platform for women's voices. The Virago Modern Classics list, launched in 1978, celebrated women writers and sought to redefine the idea of a ‘classic’.

The first Virago Bookshop opened at 64 Long Acre, London WC2, in late spring 1984. The bookshop was known for its range of books, from literary fiction and poetry to history and memoirs..

The two-floor shop featured a reading room and event space in the basement for readings, signing sessions, and talks. The bookshop also introduced a section dedicated to second-hand and out-of-print books by or about women.
